Television & OTT: What do we like about both

Everything has gone digital except probably emotions. There are certain things that are meant to remain human. The good old idiot box has a history of its own in terms of content. A huge wave of change hit the world of Television way back in 1940s. It all started with the launch of the Cable TV. The jolly guy from US, John Walson was the first cable operator. He altered the digital TV timeline way back in 1948 in Pennsylvania.

The transition:How TV viewing changed from a linear to multidimensional

Moving on to 1970s’, HBO became America’s leading Cable Station which brought with it a stupendous combination of movies, original series and specials. Now zoom in to 1990’s when the internet first started with the launch of the World Wide Web. It was a wave that gripped us all and we liked it.

We had just started adjusting to this vast almost parallel dimension of emails and social media, the videos came in. People were conditioned to watching videos and other content in various ways through a multitude of platforms.

With YouTube and other video streaming platforms the stage was set for Over-the-Top streaming. Content providers went full throttle with the idea of digital streaming and were introduced to the world of Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Voot, Zee5 and many more.

What do we like about TV and Digital Viewing

Television has always been about laidback viewing. Something you can just switch on and watch at home.

OTT zapped this scene, now you can watch anything you want on the go. But the question is which one is better? Well, both are. It all depends on content. What do you want to watch, when and where? For those of us who grew up watching TV, OTT platforms are a charming way of disrupting our idea of content and entertainment, but in a good way.

Television die?

No we don’t think so. It is a vast medium and has the widest user base. It is still a popularly watched medium. The cord-cutting revolution is here, no doubt it is a little intimidating but it can’t shake the foundations of this medium. Improvisation is the key to success at most places. Television needs to change its content and extend its outreach to the new age watchers.

Why we love OTT platforms?

OTT is about watching your type of content at your convenience. All you need is a stable internet connection and a digital device aka smartphone and you are all sorted. With multiple genres on a single platform, you can watch it whenever you want.

For OTT viewers, it’s happy viewing without any worries. No care in this world! Just log on and start watching.
